Pro-Tip Thursday! Making That Stone!

Greetings Survivors!

Welcome to the Evening addition to Pro-Tip Thursday!  I am posting this much later than normal because “Work” got in the way of “Play” today!  But that is the way it goes sometimes!  You got to Hustle to earn that dollar to make sure you have the things in life you need and want!  Surprisingly our game is kinda similar! Our game has an economic aspect to it as well.  You often hear it said, “Do Work, Get Paid!”   So, I thought I would have a conversation about the Economics within our game to help people get started playing in that aspect of the game!

Now, I could have a long, detailed, dry discussion about the Economy of our game.  How it relates to other games within the Dystopia Rising world or the Overall Economy of the entire system… but…..  I almost put myself to sleep even thinking about discussing that, plus I have to be honest and say there are better people out there than me to teach that class.   Instead I would rather start by discussing the two main ways of creating some cash flow for your character or, should I say, Stone flow for your character!  In my opinion, there are two ways to create revenue during a game.  In game sources and out of game sources.

I know some of you are expecting me to cite the very specific skills that create in game revenue.  Yes, you Etilariat’s out there I am looking at you.  Yes, you can magically create money from your… Cough.. Sorry I wont finish that…  But that skill is out there. There are a few other ways to bring money into your pockets. But for most players you have to use your skills in a way to help you make that stone!

Every player can pick skills that either Create items or Create resources to be used in our game.   You can farm herbs, Cook meals, make weapons, forage for scrap and use many other skills to create something to sell or trade with people.  During the game you will have the opportunity to Search for items, or scrap or maybe pick up things during encounters with NPC’s.   These are all things you can collect to sell and trade within the game.   Repairing armor, Healing wounds or fixing a Fracture are all services you can charge for.

Now our game is pretty much a us against them mentality. So if your fighters have been protecting everyone during the big fight.  It might make you unpopular to charge for healing or repairing armor, but those are choices.  Just like if you don’t tip your craftsman or healer you may find yourself out in the fight with no armor or in the morgue… Just sayin…

One of the major points of the 3.0 rules is that any player can get involved at any level of this game.  It goes the same for the economy as well.  In your first game you can learn the skills to grow herb and cook meals that are needed in town.  Then you can sell those in town to create cash for your character.   It is all about how much time you want to spend doing it.

The other avenue to creating in game money is selling real life items.  You can sell drinks, food or real items you have made for in-game currency.  You want to make sure you tell people the ingredients of an item when you sell it because there are lots of people with food issues in our game.  But if you wish to spend your out of game time and real life money on items to sell in game for in-game currency you can do this.  You just cannot sell things for real money during the game.   There is a long list of things that players have sold during the game.  Food seems to be very popular….

Now you can see that this is just scratching the surface of this topic.  I will add more to this later in the year.  If you have any questions on this topic you want to discuss, then make sure you DM me the question and it might become a Pro-Tip Thursday topic!

Till Next time Survivors!!!

I will see you in the Waste!!!

Pro-Tip Thursday 4-21-2022

Greetings Survivors!

Today, I want to talk to you about surviving in the real world while playing our game in the woods of Arkansas!  Last year We had a conversation about playing in the cold and wet. Today,  we want to talk about playing in the Hot and Muggy!

Spring has definitely sprung and each game will get hotter as we move forward into the summer!   That warmth is not only becoming something that we have to worry about but we are going to have an increase of bugs to deal with as well!

So to begin, The heat is a huge threat to our health. So avoid heat exhaustion:

  1. Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing. ...

  2. Protect against sunburn. ...

  3. Drink plenty of fluids. ...

  4. Take extra precautions with certain medications. ...

  5. Make sure your Costume has removable layers

  6. Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day. ...

  7. Get acclimated. ...

  8. Be cautious if you're at increased risk.

Be smart when it comes to heat and you will be able to have a good time and not have to visit the medical Cabin!

As for bugs on our site,  we have a collection of things that can cause issues. Ticks, Chiggers, Mosquitoes can make you miserable  or sick if you dont take proactive steps to make them avoid you!   you're outside at a time of day when insects are particularly active, such as sunrise or sunset, cover your skin by wearing long sleeves and trousers. wear shoes when outdoors. apply insect repellent to exposed skin – repellents that contain 50% DEET (diethyltoluamide) are most effective.

Ticks are the big thing we want to watch out for.  Here is some info for the CDC for prevention:

Prevent Tick Bites

  • Know where to expect ticks. Ticks live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or even on animals. Spending time outside walking your dog, camping, gardening, or hunting could bring you in close contact with ticks. Many people get ticks in their own yard or neighborhood.

  • Treat clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin. Permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing and camping gear and remain protective through several washings. Alternatively, you can buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear.

  • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. EPA’s helpful search tool can help you find the product that best suits your needs. Always follow product instructions. Do not use products containing OLE or PMD on children under 3 years old.

  • Avoid Contact with Ticks

    • Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.

    • Walk in the center of trails.

I am sure our veteran players have more tips and tricks to share with these two topics!  So lets hear from you about how your control your heat levels and what you do to stay safe from bugs!

Till next time Fam!!

See you in the Waste!!

Pro-Tip Thursday! Safe Combat!

Greetings Survivors!!!

Welcome back to another Thursday addition of Pro-Tip Thursday!  Yes, life has slowed down a little for me so I am back in the groove!!!!  (*authors note** I don’t promise to stay in the groove but you are getting lucky today!)

With today’s Pro-Tip we are going to return to COMBAT!!!!

Combat is one of the exciting parts of our game.  Most of us have played tabletop games where in our mind’s eye our characters fight the heroic battles, slay the mighty beast or possibly make the ultimate sacrifice to save our friends.  We feel that in our bones, it becomes the stories of legends!!!  Dystopia Rising gives us a chance to actually swing that sword and stand with our friends against the foes of our world!

On the Feb 3 Pro-Tip Thursday we started the conversation about combat rules and the combat basics.  Today I want to discuss safe combat tactics.

Let’s begin with what Safe Combat tactics look like? Like I mentioned in the Feb 3 article we use the lightest touch combat method.   We do not use all the power in bodies to deliver a blow.  We control the power of our attacks because we are not in the business of hitting as hard as we can.  We also want to be safe in how we engage in combat.

When we engage in combat, we want to make sure we are in control of how we are approaching other players and give each other the room to fight safely.  We want to make sure there is enough room for a person between us.  If we are stepping up to strike the other we do not want to leap at them in order to get in a quick strike.  That can cause a chain event that leads to someone getting hurt.  It is natural for someone to jump back when someone leaps at them.  This is where terrain, other people,  or just our natural ability to trip over things start leading to a dangerous combat situation.  Big fights in the dark  are already dangerous with not being able to see terrain.  When you add uncontrolled combat to that it can lead to people getting hurt.  So we ask that you keep the following things in mind while fighting.

  1. Be aware of your surroundings.  Look at the terrain.  Be careful of mud, rocks, trees and any other physical object.

  2. Make sure you are physically prepared for combat.  This is important for being able to control the safety of a combat. If you are too tired, hurt or not in a good mindset for combat, walk away from it.

  3. Be kind to the other person.  Everyone is on a different level of physical abilities. The idea is to have fun doing this, not put a beat down on a weaker opponent.  The more experience you have in our game, the more responsibility you will have to help make sure everyone is having a safe good time.

  4. Safety first. Just because you can make that move on the opponent, make sure its safe for both them and you  to do it.

  5. Look for the orange or blue.  Non-combat players and Bluebirds are always around. Make sure you are aware of those wearing orange and keep an eye on bluebirds.

Keeping these things in mind will help us all to make sure we are being safe and everyone has fun at our game. That concept is woven into so many different  aspects of our game and Community.

Ok all Till next time!!!

Stay Safe and We will see you in the Waste!!!

Pro-Tip Thrusday!

Greetings Survivors!!  Welcome to Pro-tip Thursday the Friday Addition!!!

Yes, I know you are saying.. Really Curtis?  Another Pro-Tip on a Friday???   Well I can say that I needed a little more time this week after last weekend’s Game to recover enough both physically and mentally.  Which is kinda helpful because Recovery is this weeks topic!

After a game, it's important to recover both physically and mentally.   I don’t know about you but our first live game back hit me physically pretty hard!   I think we can all blame the “Hill of Death” for our legs feeling like rubber and just being worn out!

So to recover physically,  I have done the following:

  1. I stretch every morning.  My muscles in my legs and back have been super tight since the exercise.  Too many of us sit at desks all day so spending a little time stretching  will keep you limber and loose.  It will also help get the acids out of your muscles to help them recover.

  2. Hydration.  Before a game and after a game.  Hail hydrate!   Drink that water.

  3. Muscle massage.  Many different ways to do this either professionally or privately. I use a muscle roller to work over my sore muscles.

  4. Take it easy.  This week I have not been to the gym. I have taken some light walks with my wife but I really overdid it this weekend so I am taking a physical break before working out again.

But the other thing we have to do is recover Mentally.  Larping is an event that requires a great deal from players. It requires as much mental energy as physical energy.  Many players find themselves in a state of tired confusion, exhaustion and emotionally raw after a Game.   It does not help that building up to a game we wear ourselves out getting ready by crafting, packing and planning what our characters will do.   After the event ends we find ourselves back in our real lives dealing with what comes after the event.   Most of us call it “Larp Drop” , but it is a form of Post Larp depression.

Now this is something that is very common. So we have a few tips on how we can help each other through this.

  1. Reach out to your friends.  This is the reason we have “After’s” together.  It gives us a chance to talk to each other as ourselves, not our characters.  We can tell the war stories from the weekend, talk to players about events to make sure everyone is cool about what happened and just rest with each other in not a game space.

  2. Distract yourself from the game. Spend time with friends or family doing something other than DR.  Do something that takes your mind off of game, read books, play some video games. I come home and have dinner with my wife and we watch TV together on the couch.  It's a very relaxing evening.

  3. Journal your event. By writing down the feeling and emotions you felt it can help you externalize the event and help you put things down in an order that is meaningful to you.

We can help each other through the drop and watch out for our friends during this time. This may trigger other imbalances that are already in place so we want to check on our friends to help.

Another way to help process the weekend is to give feedback to the game runners!  This event is Our event. Our community builds these stories together.  Those of us who put this crazy thing together need to hear from you.  Are we doing well?  Are we doing bad?  What can we do to improve?   Did something happen that you need to be heard about?   We cannot fix it or make it better if we do not know.

Give feedback Here!!

https://www.dystopiarisingar.com/feedback-form

Again,  Yes,  I know the walk to the post office in this game succccckkkkeeeddddd…..   That feedback has been heard, recognized and prioritized for fixing!

So Fam, watch out for each other and I look forward to seeing you at our next live game!!!

See you in the waste!!!

5 days Away!!

Greetings Fam!!

We are 5 days away from our First live game at Rodgers Scout Reserve! I do not know about you, but I am getting pretty excited about the Next Chapter of our game!

But to be honest I am feeling a Little nostalgic about Crystal Creek. We had a great time there and told a lot of great stories! The rest of the team feel as I do so we put our heads together to come up with a pretty cool way of remembering Crystal Creek!

We still have some Crystal Creek patches in our Inventory. For those who have never seen it here it is!

Crystal Creek Patch

We have added it Back into our Tickets sales for this game. We have also created rocker panel patches, that can go above and below this patch. These patches will say First In and Last Out

These patches are black with gold trim and lettering.

The idea of these patches is to be able to show with pride who was at Crystal Creek when. If you were one of the original players at Crystal Creek you can wear the First In Patch. If you where here at the last game at Crystal Creek ( both Online or live) You can wear the Last Out patch.

Those of us who were at Both get to wear both!

The patches will be 6 dollars each or you can buy all 3 for 15.

You can purchase these with your ticket along with our new Quiet Hollows Original patch! If you have already bought your ticket you can indeed just go to tickets and order the patch. You will be able to order them at check in as well.

I hope to see you all Friday April 1st! Order your tickets and get checked in as soon as possible!!

A Late Pro-Tip Thursday!!

Greetings Fam!!  Get Ready for A super long Pro-Tip Thursday!!!  Yes I know what you are saying.. Dude,  its Friday… Ok I was really busy yesterday!!!  This two week turn around is killing the staff for sure!  So thank you for your patience

OK enough whining and excuses!!! Pro-Tip Time!

Today our Pro-Tip is all about next weekend's first live game at RSR!!!!

We are all super excited to start our live games back up again and start in a brand new place that is just waiting for us to go tell new stories!  Hopefully you guys are ready to go do it!!

So in order to do that well, I thought I would spend the time here to talk about changes to the routine that we will have with our new site.

So let's get this rig rolling!

First thing we want to make sure you know is where is Check In!  When you turn into the Ranch off of Boy Scout Road, You will see the Rangers House on the right.  You will take the left that leads into the ranch.  You will drive 2 miles on this road until you reach the lodge.  Remember this is a dirt road with lots of potholes.  So remember the speed limit is 20 miles per hour.  You will see the Lodge at the top of the hill.  Its a large white building you cannot miss by itself on top of a hill.

We will allow people on site after 2 pm on Friday!    The good news is that you are allowed to drive on site.  You can drive to your campsite or to below the hill of the cabins.   The road to the cabins is very rough and there is only room for one vehicle at a time.  So make sure you are being super safe if you decide to drive up there.  We actually recommend you park at the bottom of the hill by the Caboose and walk you stuff up.  Its not very far we promise!  Then you can stop by the dining hall and drop off any cold food for storage in walk-in or freezer.

There are tons of campsites to choose from on the site!

You can camp on any site or choose to make a tent city in the large field by the dining hall!

Once you are done you can move your car to the parking lot. This is really close to our game area so we will be referring to it as the DJ Graveyard and it will be an OOG space. So if you need something from your car it's quick to get. So you don't have to keep everything in your tent or cabin.

So Other things to remember:

  1. Genred eating plates and utensils.   This camp does not have plates and cups for you to use. Yes, full kitchen w pots and pans.  But no plates, cups or forks. So be prepared.

  2. Please mark your food in freezers and walk in.

  3. When you cook in the kitchen you clean your mess up!! There is not a Dishwasher on this site. All dishes must be hand washed.

And Finally this place is a huge place.  It is 3000 acres.  This is our first time here. So if you are going to go walk about and explore.  Please stop by the post office and let us know where you might be heading and please don't go alone.   Also for our Foragers our First game will be very much us figuring out the good places to go. So look for more closer Forage at this game and expect it to expand as we get to know the place better!

Ok like I said this is a long list of information.  If you have any questions, reach out to use either on Facebook or Discord.  We will try to answer every question you have.   With this first game there are most likely going to be hick ups.  So prepare yourself to give us some grace as this weekend goes.   I am sure that we will bind together as the awesome community that we are to make this our new home where we all have fun.

Also Do not Forget we are Offering s special Quiet Hollows Original Patch to those who attend this game! you can purchase it when you pay for your ticket or at site!

Ok fam!  That's it for me today!   Much love to you all and…

See you in the Waste!!!

The April Tickets Are Open!!

Greetings Fam!! The tickets to our first life game at our new site is on sale NOW!!!!

Game will be April 1-3

Also, to celebrate our first ever game, We are offering the Quiet Hollows Original patch! This patch is for those who first step onto this new land! Wear this patch with pride and tell the world your where an original member of this town!!!

Who got the plots? we got the plots!!!

Greetings Fam!

Today’s Protip is a very timely one for us to talk about.  Our last Protip was about immersion in the game.  We spoke about how to create that feel for the game that we lay over ourselves like a blanket and think I am in this world for real.  Today I want to talk about how to get the most out of your game.

Several times we have had feedback from players that it seems like the plot is only being written for a certain group of people. This refrain has come up over and over again throughout the years we have run our game.  We strive not to make this a reality, but sometimes that perception is out there.  If you are feeling like this is so. Please talk to us.  We can't fix anything if we don't know it's broken.  But there is some of the responsibility that lays on you as the player.  So this Protip is how to proactively make sure you are involved in what is happening.

To begin, the simplest way to make sure you are involved is to get involved. You can do two things while playing this game.  Actively look to get involved or wait around for involvement to find you.  Plot hooks run out of Ops all the time.  Jump into whatever they are doing. Go do the dumb as we like to say.  It makes for better stories to play with what is being sent out.  IF you choose not to do the things that have been written.  That is a choice.  That plot goes on without you. While you sit there waiting for something you want to do.

Now you say… Hey that sounded dumb or something I am not interested in so why go do it?  Your right, that might not be up your alley or something you want to be involved in. So what do I do now?  Well my friends, allow me to educate you on how to help create a plot that YOU will be interested in!!!!

First out of the gate is…..  REQUEST PERSONAL PLOT!!!  You got a plot idea??  Ask for it!  Our writers would love to create something for you and with you.  Put in a request!!!  Also, have you turned in a backstory for your character?  Plot can come from that as well.

I know you guys think we are super clairvoyant and can just read your minds, but no that is not true.  Our writers are very creative and will make up great stories for you but if we don't know what you want then it will be hit or miss.

3.0 also gives us the ability to request master abilities Mod.  There may be Master Criminal, Master Financial, Master Social and a few more master abilities that you can request mods be written just for those with those skills!

You can also request a PFA plot request for your characters as well!

So there are lots of opportunities to help our writers create the plot you want to see.

Go Here https://www.dystopiarisingar.com/action-requests

So till next time my friends!

Go Do the Dumb!!!  And we will see you in the waste!!!

Pro-Tip Thursday!!! Lets Talk IMMERSION!

Greetings Fam!

Today’s pro-tip is all about Immersion. No, I am not talking about the act of putting someone or something into liquid, I am talking about the deep mental involvement that takes our game to the next level.

Our game is created when we share a story.  That story exists inside our heads and is shared through our actions. We use phrases like buy in and opt in to describe the mental process of sharing the story with each other. Because the story can be stopped cold if we don't actively help move it to the next person.

So, this is our goal as players to help the story move along.  We do that by immersing ourselves into the story with our costuming, props and mental buy in.

Costuming is one of the biggest ways to help with immersion. Taking the time to genre your gear helps those around you to immerse themselves into the story. Like all costuming it’s the attention to the small details that sell the costume.  Worn looking boots, aged fabrics, repurposed materials help create the idea we are in the post-apocalyptic world.

Our personal props also help bring the story to life.  With our move to Rodgers Scout Reserve, we have already spoken about the need for personal cups, plates and eating utensils. Take the time to make them fit the genre.

But our biggest way to help everyone is to remember who we are around what we are talking about.  It's really easy to be sitting around a table with our friends and forget we are supposed to be playing Dystopia Rising and discuss things that are not part of the world.  That is the mental buy in we speak about.  It is easy for us to say something that knocks people around us out of the immersion into our world.

So, we look for opportunities to help us all buy into the story.  Luckily, we have a new opportunity after our last online game.  We have moved into a new town.  We have a chance as players to name the new town we will be living in.   So, we want to hear from you!   If you have an idea for a new town name, we want to hear it!   Hit the survey below and give us your suggestion.  We will look at them and put up a vote of the best suggestions.

Till Next Time!!!

See you in the Waste!!

new town name!

Its A Brand New WORLD!!!

Greetings Fam!!

What happens Next is up to you! Our next game is an online event scheduled for March 18-20! Tickets will on sale Wednesday 2-23-2022!!!

Pro-Tip Thursday!

Greetings Survivors!!!

At the end of last week's Pro-Tip, I said we would be discussing more specific combat skills and calls.  However, I want to take a page out Jonathan Lloyd's book over at Dystopia Rising Texas. He Does an excellent blog for them he calls the Rules Ramble.  I recommend you look him up and check out what he does!   So we are going to interrupt what I planned to discuss with a conversation with the new things that are coming out of National before our next game!

To begin this discussion we have two new resources for players to use:

Errata & FAQ — Dystopia Rising

And

Lexicon — Dystopia Rising

Both of these exist to provide information to the players. Those of us who have played Dystopia Rising for several years are aware of two things.

1. Things often need clarification

2.  New things come out all the time that are not in the book.

So, to provide a place that players (and Staff! ;-)  can go to get the current information.

Now I do not know about you, but I had to look up what Errata meant.  I mean, I knew FAQ meant Frequently asked questions, but my brain was puzzled looking at Errata so for the rest of you who don't know what it meant either, here it is.

er·ra·tum

/eˈrädəm/

noun

plural noun: errata

  1. an error in printing or writing.

    • a list of corrected errors appended to a book or published in a subsequent issue of a journal.

So, if you knew that already… Then congratulations, you are very smart… Now shut up….

This means that this is where they have found mistakes in the book, and this is the place where you get clarifications of rules that are used at National Events.  Now some of you paid attention to that last statement and asked “what about my local game? “If our Local game uses a different interpretation of the national rules at our game, we will list it on our website in a game space to clarify our local rules.

So Unlike Errata, I am very familiar with the word Lexicon.  Most games have their own vocabulary of words and terms that players have to become familiar with.  The Lexicon is actually going to be a living document, meaning it will be updated and changed as new things come out or meanings of the words change.

So, these are two great resources for everyone to use!  I would recommend taking some time before our online game on Feb 18th through the 20th!

Well, I will see you next week, Survivors!!!  For a little fun I put a movie quote in this pro-tip.  The first person to DM the quote and the movie it is from I will give 10 caps to!

Till next week! See you in the Waste!

Pro-Tip Thursday!! Let's Talk Combat!

Greetings Survivors!!!

Today’s Pro-Tip Thursday is dealing with one core thing we engage in every trade… COMBAT!

Yes, the ability to beat on our friends with padded sticks while running around in the woods in costume brings great joy to a lot of our hearts!

But combat in our game is not just whacking away at each trying to hit the person with all our might.  We engage in Contact-Safe Combat. (See page 150 in book).  So, our combat method is Lightest Touch Combat. Which means you only hit a person hard enough to register the blow.

We have the following legal striking areas:

  • Chest

  • Back

  • Side

  • Legs

  • Shoulders

Strikes to the head, Neck, groin, hands and Feet are not legal and are not allowed.

On Page 151 of the rule book are more detailed rules on combat so make sure you read that page.  Some highlights I want to hit are:

  • All swings must be 90 degrees

  • Attacks must not exceed 3 swings in a row without a break between flurries

  • With the lightest touch system if you touch a weapon to block then it's blocked.

  • You cannot hit the same place twice in a row.

One of the better changes of 3.0 in my opinion is that anyone can use any form of basic weapon.  You don't have to spend XP on learning how to use a standard sword, or a pistol or a bow. If your buddy throws you a rifle to use while he is fighting. You can use the rifle.  You use the basic ability of that weapon only, but you can use it.

Another thing about our game is we offer the ability to be a NON-COMBAT Character.  Now a player can choose to be a Non-Combat Character at any time, or a player can have their combat privileges suspended because they are not following the rules of combat.

Non-Combat Characters will be wearing an orange head band to signify they are non-combat. At night they will wear orange glow to show everyone around them they are non-combat.

But just because you are non-combat it does not mean you cannot be attacked. On page 150 of the book, it describes how to engage in combat with a Non-Combat Character.

To sum it up.  An attacker must approach within melee striking range or reasonable missile range. Then they start calling damage (or Skills).  The call automatically lands. (Note: they cannot rapid fire off the calls. It must be a reasonable pace) The Non-Combat Character can use skill calls to defend. They cannot carry weapons in their hand, but if they have a phys rep on their belt they can use defensive weapon skills that are dependent on having a weapon in their hand.

So, this is the basic overview of Combat in DR.  Next week I will discuss specific combat skills and calls during combat.

Till next week Survivors!!!

See you in the waste!!!!

WORK WEEKEND ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Greetings Survivors!

We are excited to announce our first work weekend at Rogers Scout Reservation!!!!

March 4-6.

Our plan at this time is to have an employee at the site by 2 pm on Friday the 4th.  We want to give a chance to walk around the site before we start the work weekend.    Plus friday night will be an easy hang out and have fun with each other!  We are planning to stay in the lodge so think giant sleep over!

On Saturday the work will begin!   We shall hopefully have 2 crews working two major projects. The first is moving our stuff down the road from Camp Cahinnio!  The other crew will begin the clean up of the cabins and other buildings we want to use.

Sunday we will finish up tasks and possibly do some Guide training if we are lucky!

So with the two major plans we will need people to bring the following:

What are CAP's?

Greetings Survivors!

Today Pro-Tip is about a wonderful resource that everyone in the game can accrue.

Community Action Points AKA CAP’s.

CAP’s!!! Good GAWD!!!  What Are they good For???  ( Sung to “War” by Edwin Star)

Well unlike war, CAP’s are good for a LOT of things.

So let's begin by looking them up in the book….   Turn to page ummmmm,  ok not there… Maybe Chapter ummmmm… Huh… There is no mention of Community Action Points in the book.

Yes, it's not in the book because it was added back into existence after 3.0 started. So where do we learn about CAP’s.

Follow this link for a more detailed explanation of CAP’s

https://www.dystopiarisinglarp.com/community-action-points

But, for our discussion today,

A simple definition:

“Community Action Points is a system of thank-you’s and rewards that exists to give to players that work to make the community of Dystopia Rising a better place. These points can be turned in for things that will enhance their in-game experience.”

Our game requires a lot of moving parts and time put on.  CAP’s give us the chance to thank the players who are going the extra mile to help us and make our game better.  The official statement reads: “CAPs are given at the discretion of game runners to individuals who have gone above and beyond to contribute to the game in a positive way.  This can be anything from helping a fellow player to assisting game runners make things happen.”

Some in world examples of things we give out caps for are:

Below is example of CAPs awards:

  • Thank You!: 10 CAPs

  • Above and Beyond: 25 CAPs

  • Life Saver: 50 CAPs

  • There Are No Words: 100 CAPs

  • Extra Casting: 10 CAPs per hour

  • Guides: 40 CAPs per event attended, for being great

Any Guide can award CAP’s at any time

So, what are they good for really?  How can I use them?

Well, you can use CAP’s in game and out of game!!!

In the game it is easy, you can get materials, Currency, Teachers for skills, meals and brews.  See the post office of the full list.  If you follow the link above it can show you a lot of possibilities. It will be up to the game runners for final approval what's available in your area.

These points are not transferable, but you can use your points for friends.  There are some limits of use, IE You can only buy 2 blue plate specials per game per person.   So, if you buy yourself 2 you can buy your friend 2, but that is all you can have.

But you can use your CAP’s out of game.   You can turn CAP’s to unlearn skills or even do a complete rewrite.   Reach out to your directors for approval.

You can also EARN CAP’s outside of the game as well.  We have opportunities to earn CAP’s through donating items on our wish list to our chapter.  We also give you opportunities to make donations to Charities for caps as well.  You can donate your time or money to these charities and get CAP’s for it.  Because these are Community Action Points. Our community is more than just our game.

So, there are lots of opportunities to earn CAP’s.

They are the easiest way we get to say thank you to those who help us run this crazy game and make it awesome for everyone.

Now with a final Thank you for everyone who makes this game great!!  You can say “My Cap is off to you!”

snicker… ok with that dad joke we are done…

We will See you in the Waste!!!

Greetings Survivors!!!

There is a quote that I like:

“There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” ~ C.S. Lewis

Coupled with:

“The Only Constant in Life Is Change.”- Heraclitus

We have a lot of change happening right now here in our corner of the apocalypse. We have a new camp in which to explore and we have a new team at the helm steering us through the insanity that comes along with our particular brand of chaos.

Change can lead to a lot of uncertainty and concern about the future. We have a tendency to hold on to the old ways instead of seeing the cool things ahead of us. But when that happens for me, I think about what we are taking with us into that future.

A lot of us were concerned about the change to 3.0 in our game. But our game is still the community of people we enjoy telling stories with. That keeps getting better all the time.  And moving to a new site is just us having a new place to tell new stories together.

Some might be concerned about how new management is going to make things different. To help relieve that concern we have the following Mission Statement that will guide our steps:

We at Cryptid Creations believe that the best part of our game is the players, and we will strive to make sure each one has an exciting and fulfilling time. We will always attempt to deliver the best experience possible at all Dystopia Rising Arkansas events and listen to feedback in order to constantly improve and grow.

Despite the dark and violent themes of the game, Dystopia Rising Arkansas is a safe place for people of all types. We will NEVER discriminate against someone based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or any other factor.

Due to the nature of our game, we encourage our players to let us know of any real-life fears or situations that would cause them to become uncomfortable during the game. While we may not be able to prevent every situation, we will do our best to alert those players when such a scene may be occurring soon. Also, we will always respect the wishes of any player who chooses to ‘Opt out’ of a particular scene for those reasons.

Our goal is to develop our community into a place where all feel safe in joining in to tell great stories with each other. In order to do that, we encourage our members to make us aware of anything large or small that may place that safety in jeopardy by members ignoring our guidelines and policies. We will take the steps necessary to protect our community when such cases are found.

Most importantly, we acknowledge our own humanity and possible mistakes we may make in this endeavor and will strive to minimize those moments. We will strive for open and honest communication and to create transparency in our actions that can be seen by our community members.

We believe that communication is the key that will help us make sure this mission is fulfilled.  So we want to hear from you. We need feedback. If you have concerns, reach out to us. If you have any questions, ask them. We will answer them the best we can.

We care about our community and will protect it fiercely. This will always be our first priority.

Remember the statement, “I am because we are.” We are in this together.

We are looking forward to a great new season of Dystopia Rising Arkansas and hope you are as well!

Sincerely,

Beth, Curtis and Ro

The Start of an Outro

We’ve never hidden things from ya’ll and I don’t intend to start now. Here’s the TLDR, but please read the rest when you can, I promise it’s not too long. <3

I’m stepping back.

In June I’m folding the company Besides Ourselves Productions, LLC that has been a franchisee with Dystopia Rising LLC.

Beth, Truate, and Ro are creating a company that will work with DR LLC and continue doing business as Dystopia Rising: Arkansas. The current plan is that I’ll work with them as a contracted employee to help with transition and teach them bits they may not have learned yet.

So that’s the TLDR - here’s the mush and whys.

It’s been a wild and wonderful six years filled with a mix of happiness, stress, exhaustion and accomplishment. I look at everything and I feel proud. I also feel very tired. I’m at the point where I know I’m lacking the drive that this position deserves. I care, but not as much as I should. And so I’m taking a step back and giving myself room to heal from burn-out before I damage the beautiful thing I helped make with ya’ll.

I taught ya’ll the phrase “I am because you are” - a simplified way of saying that I reflect back the things ya’ll give to me. If I am kind it is because you show me kindness. I am taking the step back because otherwise I won’t be able to reflect back all the amazing things ya’ll bring into the community and my life.

Nothing changes if nothing changes. I can’t expect my burnout to magically heal if I don’t change what I’m doing - so here I am making a very hard, but very necessary, change.

I’m still going to be around, I’m still going to be involved - just not as much and moving towards less visibility. Give your love and support to the new team like you did the old and everything’ll be amazing all over again.

-Krista

From your new team:

We’re still arranging things on the back-end BUT we can let you know the following:

Ian will remain involved as a contracted employee, but won’t be an owner in the new business. So responsibilities are shifting but the faces remain the same!

We’re looking to start back at live events SOMEWHEN in July or August IF the local COVID-19 numbers, state (AR Dept of Health), and CDC guidelines are favorable.

We will be requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination to attend our events. You must have completed a course of treatment two weeks prior to our event.

We will also be requiring face masks per state & CDC guidelines.

Keep an eye out for future announcements from us - we’ll let you know the good news when we have it!

-Beth, Truate & Ro
