Today’s pro-tip is all about Immersion. No, I am not talking about the act of putting someone or something into liquid, I am talking about the deep mental involvement that takes our game to the next level.
Our game is created when we share a story. That story exists inside our heads and is shared through our actions. We use phrases like buy in and opt in to describe the mental process of sharing the story with each other. Because the story can be stopped cold if we don't actively help move it to the next person.
So, this is our goal as players to help the story move along. We do that by immersing ourselves into the story with our costuming, props and mental buy in.
Costuming is one of the biggest ways to help with immersion. Taking the time to genre your gear helps those around you to immerse themselves into the story. Like all costuming it’s the attention to the small details that sell the costume. Worn looking boots, aged fabrics, repurposed materials help create the idea we are in the post-apocalyptic world.
Our personal props also help bring the story to life. With our move to Rodgers Scout Reserve, we have already spoken about the need for personal cups, plates and eating utensils. Take the time to make them fit the genre.
But our biggest way to help everyone is to remember who we are around what we are talking about. It's really easy to be sitting around a table with our friends and forget we are supposed to be playing Dystopia Rising and discuss things that are not part of the world. That is the mental buy in we speak about. It is easy for us to say something that knocks people around us out of the immersion into our world.
So, we look for opportunities to help us all buy into the story. Luckily, we have a new opportunity after our last online game. We have moved into a new town. We have a chance as players to name the new town we will be living in. So, we want to hear from you! If you have an idea for a new town name, we want to hear it!
